NAEA CONVENTION RATES:
BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK!
Washington, DC-NAEA President Eldon Katter wanted to know how NAEA's
convention preregistration fees compared with other subject area associations
for attending a national convention. He asked Executive Director, Thomas
Hatfield to call several subject area associations to survey their convention
fees for 1998. Upon seeing the results Hatfield concluded, "our members are
getting the best bang for the buck; the fees are very competitive, actually,
among the lowest!
"We try to stay competitive." said Hatfield, "NAEA has raised convention fees
3 times in the last decade and a half. This year, NAEA offered over 800
sessions and events to attend and provided 208 exhibitor booths for members
to visit. Few of the other associations offer that volume for such low fees."
Results of the phone survey were for regular members at the preregistration
level and were actual rates for a national convention in 1999. The fees for
teacher subject area associations are:
Biology teachers-$85 to $110 (on a dated scale)
Music teachers-$120 (1998 fees)
Exceptional Education teachers-$169
"Even though there are other associations we could have surveyed, I think
this provides a glimpse of the value NAEA members get for our fees. NAEA
fees ($85) are among the lowest and have been over the last decade," said
Katter. "It is one of the 70 member benefits the Association provides."
