ikat in the classroom?

Hi, all,

We just started our weaving unit in my 3D class (I always save it for the
end of the year--it's so CLEAN!). Coincidently, I was reading an article
in Ornament magazine about ikat clothing, and suddenly wondered if anyone
had any experience doing ikat in the classroom. Combining the dyeing
with the weaving might be really interesting for the students. I have a
basic understanding of the process, but was hoping to hear what type of
fiber and dyes you've used. It's too late to order anything fancy; would
cotton thread, or even string, do?

Thanks for any help. I may just plunge in and try it with cotton and
Dylon and Rit, which are already in the room.
