Hi everyone:

Some ideas for Mother's Day...At the Family Center we are using an
engraving press in the center to do embossing. I will have an artist
demonstrate the process. Then the children can create their own embossings
for mom on the press with help from Family Center staff. Another activity
will be provided for making a frame for the embossings. I will also have
staff available to guide a gallery hunt for Mothers and Children in art.

We are also having a Mother's day Storytelling festival that day. The
storytelling festival takes place in the galleries and is based on works of
art.

I agree with others who have said that just because we are called upon to
respond to "Hallmark Holidays", doesn't mean we can't incorporate art
history, appreciation and quality art production activities in as well.

Below is promotional copy for the months of May-June in the Family Center
and the description of activities for the day in question.

May-June activities are built around the theme of I am an Artist, and
feature family friendly ways to enjoy the permanent collection. Come to the
Family Center and learn about art and artists as you experiment with
artist's tools, explore the galleries and create your own masterpieces.

Embossing
Celebrate Mother's Day and bring mom or grandma to the Family Center!
Explore another printmaking process called embossing. Watch embossing
demonstrations, then experiment with the process yourself and make mom a
special gift. Don't forget to visit the many mothers and children in
paintings and sculpture in the galleries!
