Rainsticks and curing bamboo

Hi there, Thanks so much for all the feedback on my posting about art
teachers drawing on student's work, it was really enlightening and
helped me to understand art teachers a little more.

I would like to make rainsticks out of bamboo and rice. I have been told
to cure the bamboo and I wanted to know if anybody knows what this
entails. Also, does anybody have any extra tips as to making a more
effective and sturdy rainstick ie. what is the best material to use to
plug the end?
