SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATION IN THE FIELD
BELIZE, CENTRAL AMERICA

DATES: July 10 - 15, 1998.

PLEASE JOIN US for an Archaeological Illustration Workshop in Belize, Central
America with archaeological illustrator Dr. John Antoine Labadie. Dr. Labadie
is chief illustrator of two archaeology projects in Belize for Boston
University as well as the University of Texas, Austin and the National Park
Service.

WORKSHOP MEDIUM: Pencil / graphite, pen & ink

WHAT'S INCLUDED: This workshop covers drawing tools and techniques for
documenting archaeological finds; how to develop multiple views; review of
steps and procedures for rendering scientific illustrations from a 3D object,
archaeology review. There will be daily intensive instruction and lectures on
ancient Mayan ruins and culture. We will visit and draw at Lamanai Mayan
ceremonial center and work with local museum experts to learn about Mayan
excavations in Belize. PLUS: Wildlife and cultural excursions, canoeing,
hiking and time on your own.

LOCATION: The workshop and accommodations will be in the peaceful Village of
Crooked Tree, in the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, Belize, Central America.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS WORKSHOP? Anyone interested in documentation through
illustration. Students of archaeology, anthropology, and related sciences;
students of art and scientific illustration, artists, educators, naturalists.
LEVEL: Advanced beginner to advanced.

HELPING BELIZE: This program is organized by Steppingstone Environmental
Education Tours as part of "Illustrations for the World ~ a Traveling
Conservation Project." Drawings developed during this workshop can be
duplicated and donated for educational use in Belize.

WORKSHOP PRICE: The cost of the workshop is $827. Special student rate is
$727. Package includes workshop fees, lectures, excursions, 5 nights
comfortable dormitory-style accommodations, meals, and transportation within
Belize.

AIRFARES: International airfares can be arranged through Steppingstone Tours.
$ 415 from Miami. $ 475 from Houston. Many other departure cities are
