I know what you mean about the disappointment in large advertised shows.
When I saw the O'Keefe show at LACMA years back I was so surprised at how
small her work really was! I always thought BIG! But the understated show
of Chagall's was pure joy! And the Frankenthaller was fantastic! I went
back 4 times. Took my mother, took my friends, my family. Everyone got
enveloped in her colors and textures. And it even had a lot of bad press!
The eye of the beholder???
But with so little art education in the US, it's amazing anyone goes at
all. I am always amazed at the crowds and hate the hype, but love it when I
see parents bringing their children. We need more of these museums to offer
state-wide school field trip scholarships.
