Did anyone hear the Close interview today on NPR's, Fresh Air with Terry
Gross? It was a great day for working in my studio today. I often work with
the radio on, and today there was also a program on about the importance of
art education (elements of art, materials usage, drawing) for art students,
on how much is important for someone to be an artist. My theory has always
been that you first learn how to work the tools so that you can get to
great levels of possibilities and creativity.

To Rob, what a difference a school makes! I teach at two different
elemetary schools, and the one is fun, the other depressing. In the one
school the teacher's lounge is FULL every lunch period with smiling,
joking, laughing teachers. And if I had any problems with any kids in my
class, I go to the teacher and often find there is a real home problem for
that student, and we discuss together how to help.

In the other school the teachers cut each other down behind backs, and in
front of their class of students tell me that their class this year has
more behavior problems and less able to grasp concepts than their class the
year before. I always cringe terribly at the attitudes in this school. I
also notice that the teacher's lounge is usually almost empty during lunch.
I always thought it was the admin. in the school that set the atmosphere,
but after talking around, that isn't so. The principal of the one school
use to be the one for the other school, and it's the teachers. What a shame
for everyone! If teachers had more respect for each other and their
students, the students would come through beautifully!
