I have several employees from Tonala, Mexico where they make small
whistles (animal shapes and the like) . I have asked them to make me a
few samples and we'll see how they work. You never know- we'll do them
in lowfire clay (they say barro-usually the red clay found in that area)
and try them out. They also say that in some of them (sepecially the
bird ones) they put a bean inside to alter the sound.
