You asked for suggestions on how to handle the wide disparity of
"intelligence" and/ or disipline problems in a large class during art.
I volunteer teach art and this is what I do. If there is a project that
may be too difficult/long to address as a whole class, I divide the
class up into groups and alter the project to suit each groups ability
level. Each child is able to accomplish the project at their own level.
Sometimes I am delighted in the outcome of the more "simplified"
version! I try not to make it obvious that I am catering to the class in
this way, only that we are looking for different outcomes by altering
the project for the different groups. At the end we try to save time to
look at all the outcomes and make comments.
We are talking 2nd & 3rd graders here.
