I am currently a High School Art Student in South Africa. (Grade 11)
I really enjoy art and my teacher is very inspiring. I enjoy doing
things that are very, very different and have no resemblance to anything
I've seen before. I just thought of something the other day and I would
like your opinion on it. here goes:
I was doing a preparatory sketch of a ballet dancer in a full grand jete
(splits in the air :)) and them sort of morphing into a crumpled
position in a type of animation on one page type thingie. (sorry if this
doesn't make sense but it's difficult to explain) I don't generally ask
my teacher to help and she knows that I'm capable of working on my own
when it comes to most things but when I asked her about this sketch in
particular i was very dissappointed by her reaction. She was telling me
to try and create more movement as I had already created a certain
amount of movement by repeating the shape. I tried to explain to her
that I was trying to get the contradiction between the almost 'flying'
pose and the static submissive pose. What I am objecting to is the fact
that she came and sketched over what I had done and changed the
intention and effect that I had wanted despite vehement protests on my
side. If we had been analysing a similar piece by a renowned artist she
might have said that she can see the juxtapositioning of static and
moving objects and that she can see the inner torture that a ballet
dancer goes through in performance etc.etc.etc.etc.etc That is what I
find extremely frustrating, that my work cannot be accepted for what it
is but must be 'correct' according to the teacher and the 'rules' of
art. Most really meaningful and famous pieces of our time have been so
because they have broken the 'rules' of their time.
Any comments on the situation or thoughts anyone would like to share?
