I must pass on to you an idea that I came up with during my recent
exhibition. After it opened, I noticed people would come in and very
superficially look at the paintings and walk out. I thought this won't do
at all! So I went home, and typed up a questionaire and had 300 copies
photocopied. It was a short questionnaire that started off with general
questions so as not to intimidate people, How often do you attend art shows?
What kind of painting do you prefer? etc. Then the crucial
question....which of the paintings shown do you like the best...indicate the
number. As people were on the way out, I asked them to sign the book, and
fill in a questionnaire. I guess people love to have their opinion asked,
and at this point, people went back and REALLY LOOKED AT the paintings!
They spent time comparing and deciding which they liked best. It gave me
great satisfaction. The following question on the questionnaire was: Have
you ever bought a painting at an exhibition? This was a very subtle way of
suggesting ' Hey, look, you can buy these paintings!'. Whether it helped to
improve sales or not I really can't say, but at least I had the satisfaction
that people really gave their full attention to the paintings! Even groups
of kids would come in and have lively discussions about which they liked the
best! Amazing how people of all ages love to vote on things. Now I am
still busy counting the results. It should make some interesting statistics.
