In the past I did a similar islands of clay project with second graders using
self hardening clay and the results were wonderful. After some talk about
islands and what you'd need if you were to live on one, each child fashioned
one and the added boats, trees, house, food, people, pets, etc.--whatever they
wanted. They were glued to cardboard (which they painted sea color) and some
joined with friends and built bridges to one another's islands on the same
piece of cardboard--only difficult when it was time to take them home. We
used Jazz gloss tempera and I gave them a coat of clear acrylic at the end for
a little extra protection. It was great fun!
