Re:Holiday Art

I don't address holidays anymore unless there is some art ed.integrity
with it. (Classroom teachers do a lot of holiday projects---and when of the
pieces are identical to each other and it makes me nuts. There are
classroom teachers who do very creative stuff, though.)
One project I do around Halloween is based on Edvard Munch's "The
Scream." We talk about line and composition, imagine why the figure is
screaming and marvel how the "Home Alone" pose existed over a hundred years
ago. We talk about facial expressions, then do a big, exaggerated face and
use fluorescent and black tempera to paint it. Later we view them with a
black light on, but the work stands on its own, too. I could do this
project any time of year.
