For Heidi and ART DAY. Although you don't have many visuals, maybe your
students could check some out from a local library. They could use two
reproductions of similar subject matter, but by different artists using
different styles of painting. Kids could be led in a discussion of how the
subject matter and styles are alike and different and then choose the
style they prefer and do a piece of artwork similar to one of styles.
It's fun to pull in more reproductions by the same artists and have
students figure out which artist did the work by finding clues in the style
in which the work was done. I've done this with K-5 and find that it works
well with any of those grades by adjusting how the discussion is handled.
My kids enjoy this and are becoming good "art" detectives. I even learn to
look at works in new ways by listening to comments from my students. Let
us know how ART DAY turns out. Ann in NC
