Jimmye,

A really great book which may be of interest to you is the following:

"Leonardo's Rules of Painting (An Unconventional Approach to Modern Art) by
James Beck, ISBN 0 7148 2056 3, published by Phaidon Press Limited.

James Becks takes Leonardo's writings and shows how they are still relevant
today, and how many modern artists have been influenced, either consciously
or unconsciously by Leonardo's precepts. I quote "By juxtaposing Leonardo's
writings and details from his paintings and drawings with the works of
artists from Paul Gauguin to Jasper Johns, Beck illustrates the subtle
connections between the old and the new, showing how often Leonardo's method
is echoed in modern art......"

Another good book of quotes is "A miscellany of Artists'Wisdom' compiled by
Diana Craig, ISBN 0-00-412915-6 published in the US by Running Press.

Ciao,
