Thanks for your support. I work one day per week as a play
specialist (Child Life Worker) in the Paediatric unit of our local
hospitel. I also run a unit on this subject as part of out 4th year
degree programme. Anyway.. I see the colouring book given to very
young children in the misguided belief by parents that it will help
the child learn. These same people often try to get their 3
year old to write and to copy images they have drawn for the child.
I have to work hard to diplomatically sugggest that the child will
benefit from being allowed to scribble and to explore on plain paper.
I think the problem arises because there is no system out there to
help parents understand about how children learn to read and
write (and draw). The drawing at this age is the child's written
language anyway but parents are somehow pressured to believe that if
their child can write at a young age they will perform better at
school.
Some years ago , through the Art Teachers Association of Victoria, we
produced a simple book called "Child Art". A Parents Handbook.
It was designed to fill this gap and to be distributed through the
Kindergarten networks. It was well received and is still in use. The
problem is that it still preaches to the converted. It is very hard
to convince adults that a child needs opportunity and encouragement to
explore their own creative potential
