Ellyn and Vera,

Ellyn's complaint Would not happen at my school. Art and Music are not
"Relief time" for the "real teachers". As the art teacher I have the
students as much time as any other "real teacher". Here I am an equal
partner in the Key Community with all other teachers.

In this school but not in our district the arts are as important (or even
more important!). All the special area teachers plan together with
classroom teachers. The Key School curriculum is based on Howard Garner's
"Seven Intelligences".

As an art teacher of 22 years in the Indianapolis Public Schools this is
the school that I have been looking for! Please understand that teaching
here is hard work just like anywhere else, but it is work that I can say is
under my control and choice.

There is however a real problem in American education with not enough
planning time for teachers. I think that this is a result of to much
teacher - student contact time and/or to high of a student load for
teachers.
