Our middle school has adopted a pass policy from a neighboring school--and
it works pretty well. At the beginning of each marking period, students
are issued a planbook. This is where they write homework assignments,
The inside front cover has 27 pass lines, which students fill out as
needed, and have their teacher sign. Some kids use theirs up early--and
you have to have stiff penalties for those who try to use someone else's
planbook. Extra books have to be secured, and you have to work out a few
glitches, but it's the most workable system I've seen. Also, we require
students to turn in their old books, or a written explanation, in order to
get a new one. That way, we have the books to share with parents at
