Hi, I teach middle school and enjoy it but there have been 2 teachers
recently who moved from elementary to middle school and really hated it.
One even moved back when a teacher passed away mid year because he
was so depressed about the kids. The real difference I think is that
mid. school kids don't like their teachers as a group and elementary
kids love their teachers and they respect the older grade teachers as
a group. Also the climate was so much rougher--bad language--sexual
behaviors--fights and threats etc. A school where most of the student
populations is having hormone spurts is unique and quite distracting.
I like the age because of their enthusiasm and energy and that I still get
to teach the smart kids--in high school the smart kids are generally on
a college bound course that doesn't allow for art except as a humanity
requirement. I just had a woman spend the whole day in my class. Her
kids just finished high school
and since she had always liked to make art and she was bored she decided
to return to school, get a credential and teach. She spent 2 days
observing art classes in high schools and junior high and was so
depressed at todays attitudes she was almost in tears. I have 2 awful
classes that I survive through and 4 great ones with neat kids that I
love so it really wasn't a bad experience in my mind. Perhaps you could
get a deal worked out to trade jobs for a day with the middle school
teacher. The kids would probably like it. Perhaps each of you could
come in as an expert on whatever you do yourself and teach a lesson. Sid
