I teach in a very similar situation..large class sizes, apathetic to
learning, not an inner city school, but on the edge of the city.
Students are more occupied by their personal lives...I tech a lot of
parents..123 pregnacies , population:1300. They hate to have my
teach...don't want to hear any lectures..only about half really want to
learn. However, all love "to do". I engage them in lessons that are
basically performance base. Then through the creation of the work, the
questions are asked, both from me and the students..and learning has
occurred. I mainly teach through questions...when students caome to me
with personal problems, I feel like the psychologist who ask only
questions and give no exact answers to anything....its amazing how
students can pull the answers from themselves...I love seeing the "hey,
I discovered this...I did it myself"
I don't think Picasso is the best motivation for these kids..I use
living artists that they can relate too, even if I have to pull in Tommy
Hillfiger (SP ?) or Calvin Klein...you do whatever you can to get their
attention and keep it....
Any sugfgestions for uch a group would be greatful...keeping the
attention span of the "give me " generation, and how to boost motivation
and how to get these kids to THINK, especially creatively...is he;lpful.
