Hi everyone,
I'm responding to Marge Dickinson's comments dated 4/28 regarding her crusade
against the copying of historical artwork or magazine images by high school
art students. I agree that students should learn how to draw from live
sources (the Elvis reference is great). This is especially true in a
beginning drawing class.
On the other hand, I have watched my cooperating teacher build a very
successful lesson around the theme of copying. The point being that copying
is something that artists do all the time and have done throughout history.
He has put together a very impressive slide show to document the theme (I
wish I could think of some concrete examples right now). Anyway, students
are then asked to research in the library to find a painting that they like
and use it as a source for their own work. Their departure from the
original, in style or in the juxtoposition of other images, becomes the key
issue. One of my own most successful paintings is an interpretation of
Giorgione's "The Tempest."
This approach allows for very rich discussion, and it helps kids with good
drawing technique who just "can't think of what to draw." I can't wait to
use the approach myself once I land a job!
