Concerning middle school art programs, one of the interesting curriculum
offerings my middle school ended up with was the "exploratory" elective. We are
on a 6 week grading schedule, and every 6 weeks the sixth grade (only) rotates
into a different elective to sample the offering and perhaps make a choice for
their year long electives during 7th and 8th grade. At first this seemed like a
strange way to do business but I now find I like the situation, and I'm a little
sad that I won't be teaching one of these mini-courses next year as we begin to
convert back to a Junior High.
Done well, a middle school is a very nice environment. We never did get all the
blocks and teams built completely, but that has more to do with changing
principals than anything else. We are now converting back to a Jr. High - not
because mid-school is a problem, but because of age-group demographics and
