where "it's" all going

Sandy: Thanks for responding. Over the past two days my thoughts
have returned repeatedly to this little e-mail flurry over grammar,
questioning the content/style of my original message and how it was
perceived by others. This chat-group is informal (there is the
atmosphere that we are talking among friends and kindred spirits)
yet it also is a great big amorphous unknown group: who knows who's
out there? I've worked with classroom art teachers a lot over the
years, and my message was triggered by two common (widespread)
characteristics: a) most teachers do not recognize or strengthen
their role as advocates beyond the classroom or the immediate circle
of parents and teachers in their school. The arts have very little
clout in most local politics and policy-making because their profile
is so low; teachers don't realize that their voice can make a
difference. b) people in the arts are often (but not all/always)
less careful or interested in "proper" usage, spelling, etc. It's
undoubtedly related to their great strengths in other means of
communication. However, the world out there does respond negatively
to poor communication skills, and policy- and decision-makers see
artists as less "well-educated," less disciplined, less focused than
others who dot all their i-s and cross their t-s. This affects
perceptions when budgets are allocated, curriculum standards are
determined, graduation requirements are set. So the arts teachers
continue to fight for their little territory, settle for the
resources that are tossed their way, be grateful for the little
perks that others expect regularly--and many don't see the big
picture that change can happen when, and only when, the arts can
compete and establish their legitimacy in terms that are recognized
by others out there.
My original message was not intended to nag, but to remind folks
that their communications do count. Now that I've written this out
to you, I think I will send it out to artsednet too. Thanks for our
conversation!
