I enjoyed reading your posting and some of my experiences are similar to
yours.I am a product of the UW system also (20 years ago at Eau Claire) and I
found myself ill-prepared to actually teach, although I had done well in all
my coursework. What really opened my eyes was beginning a Master's program at
Northern Illinois University in 1980. I came home from my first class totally
depressed, sure I was going to fail, because I didn't understand what they
were talking about (the class was Evaluation in Art Education). What I
eventually learned was that my experience with teacher preparation was not
necessarily the norm. My graduate studies are what actually prepared me to be
a better teacher.
I heartily agree that one of the best ways to REALLY become informed
about what's going on in the field is to be involved in your professional
organization (a statement I've made many times!) Joining your state and
national association (here in Illinois I have to pay separate memberships to
both) is just the beginning. You also have to BE INVOLVED, read the materials
sent, go to conferences and ask questions. The Internet is also becoming a
good source of information for me, as well.
A side comment: I also heartily concur with your statement that before
an individual can be a good ART teacher, he/she must be a good TEACHER.
