Christi, I have taught inner city kids for years and the one piece of advice I can give u is making the art relevant. Definitely get a lot of Latino and African American artists in there. I mean city artists, muralists, skate board artists, graffiti artists, etc.
Here's a few links. There are millions more:
I understand that these might not fit perfectly into your curriculum, but if you can at least get them excited about current, relevant art, then you can move on with classical, more traditional art history images. I find it works every time and the kids are blown away by the images because they never see images with art they KNOW and art they RECOGNIZE. Get them hooked and they will learn to love all the arts and see they are all integrated. They will understand that Picasso, Monet, Siqueiros, and all the rest were saying something in their own unique language just like modern artists are doing today. -Katrina Alexy(also from the heart of LA)
