Try dishwasher detergent. It is creamy and easier to control.

Subject: [teacherartexchange] another amazing contemporary artist plus
fun technique to try
Really interesting combinations of media and
techniques: 2005 works are my favorites...
Also, I was at home trying to figure out what to do
with a faded black tshirt in otherwise good shape and
remembered the bleach discharge technique - watered
down the bleach to about half strength and used a qtip
eye makeup applicator (pointed end)dipped in the
solution to draw on the shirt. Black fabric is
bleached to pretty bronzes, see here:
Also, bleach is not a horribly dangerous chemical to
work with... Was thinking it would be fun to try with
students! Could stretch black material on stretcher
strips, too --- Have seen stencils used with bleach
solutions in spray bottles and brushed on stamps also
- lots of possibilities!
