I don't do ceramics K-2 because I refuse to haul clay 20 miles in my car to
one building, create the projects, then transport them back 20 miles to
fire. Load them up again for another 20 mile jaunt, and hope nothing breaks
because of me. It is just not worth it to me. I have started doing one clay
project per year with grades 3-6 as a "teaser", but hauling them to my kiln
isn't quite the challenge from the elementary to the high school. I find it
difficult to do clay in a room with no sink, inadequate storage, and little
"extra" time just to deal with the logistics. I definately do clay with my
middle school and high school students - and let my 6th graders know that if
they "like working with clay" they will get to do alot of it in middle
school. Hence, my MS & HS classes are full within 2 days of schedule
release. :-)
