Re: james surls sculpture

Surls had an opening a number of years ago that I actually received an
invitation to. It was in his studio....barbeque, open bar, band, and
all to celebrate these two HUGE figures of an abstract male and female
that were suspended from his ceiling. I think they were 20 feet tall,
hung at an angle. Anyway, everyone was partying down....having a great
time, eating great food, enjoying the nice sprintime evening. The
lights dimmed, and a spotlight came up on one of the scuptures, and
Priscilla Nathan Murphey (dancer) took a running leap onto the sculpture
which swung back and forth like a pendulum...she was wearing a long
leotard, and she danced to Bolero on this sculpture! I've never seen
anything else like it, and don't expect to. Everyone's jaw dropped. It
was unbelievable. He frequently incorporated dance with his sculpture.
Usually out in a field, he invited people to his openings and they
danced around his sculptures. He was a great guy, I wish he was still
here. He started an art after school/Saturday place for kids in that
area. His wife is also an artist. Have you ever seen his drawings?
They're wonderful!
