In college we use
Photography by Barbara Upton, et. al. It
is very comprehensive (and expensive).
0000,0000,ffff"Seeing Photographs" is a good
chapter on composition. In a high school, I would try to have at
least one copy in the classroom as a reference. The 7th edition includes
a chapter on the digital camera and one on the digital darkroom. It is
over 400 pages (too heavy), has 17 chapters, is well illustrated, and
well written. I think it is about $80, but used ones are $35 at Amazon
(may not be latest edition). I allow students to get recent editions if
the cost is too high.
