How can I find info on a painter?

My parent volunteer has a question that you may be able to supply the
information on.
The painter, Mayer, is a possibly from Canada. She says the title is
written in French.

Any suggestions on how she can research this artist would be
appreciated.

The big problem is that the artist's name is Mayer and I haven't got a
first name. Do you know of any sites which list painters?
