In 1987, the freshmen I'd had my first year were seniors. I let each one
who'd taken four years of art paint a block on my cinder block wall. This
has become a tradition, and I now have over 100 blocks painted. Students put
a lot of thought into this project, and I give it a major project grade, then
have them write about it on their final exam. It is a wonderful focal point
in the school--my principal brings all visitors to the Art Room to see the
blocks. You can see the wall on the school web site
