Would any of you out there consider the collage technique a craft? I entered
some students work in a local art show and in talking to some of the people
in charge today, got a real shocker. One said they were going to change the
rules for next year. Too many pieces this year included crafts , (so she
said) although I only saw one piece of jewerly that I would consider a craft.
She told me, "They just had some pieces of paper slapped down." I told her
that was an art form, ( by the way invented by Picasso and used by countless
other artists), and not a craft. She just didn't see how a collage could be
judged the same as a painting. I'm wondering who is running the show there?
She certainly didn't sound very informed about art media. Not only that, but
the teachers were only going to get the new rules next year two months before
the show ! I don't know if I'm even going to bother next year.
I love having my kids work in an actual competition, but these people don't
sound like they know what they're doing! What's your opinion? Janet
