When we did this, we used crumpled grocery sacks or crumpled Kraft paper. We
crumpled the paper and smoothed it repeatedly, then covered it with watered
down brown tempera. The paint darkens the creases, and the resulting paper
looks a lot like actual bark. When they are dry, draw and paint on your
designs. Be sure to include just a very few white spots for sparkle.
