As I am starting plaster hands (wrapped, poured, or carved) with my HS
sculpture class, great timing allowed me to use an article in May's ARTnews
as part of the beginning process. On page 36 is an article on Nelson Mandela
and how he has drawn a series of his own hands to depict Struggle,
Imprisonment, Freedom, Unity, and Future. (Profit from the 500 sets of prints
go to his youth organizations.) I loved his quote: "I drew hands because
they are powerful instruments, hands can hurt or heal, punish or uplift.
They can also be bound, but a quest for righteousness can never be
repressed."

Those of you who "do hands" might want to get a copy of the article for your
initiations. Melissa
