Teach the needs of the student.
There is no just black or white in teaching art.
Canned art lessons can be at times be what the student needs.
One needs to teach what the student needs for growth in creativity,
observation, understanding, technique and skills not just the favorite
philosophy of the teacher .
Students need guidelines/obectives for growth too.

Why teach canned lessons sometimes:
To teach skills
To teach a process
To learn to following directions/steps
Class size/time limit
It is calming/relaxing
Self esteem
Teach neatness
Teach composition
Teach common sense
There are rules in art that need understanding

I have gone into middle schools where the majority of students
can not cut on a line, cut a shape out of the middle, can not use a
ruler, can not glue, their work is not neat, do not know a stem or leg has
more than one side, keep drawing the same object over and over, their
creative house is a circle with a dot in it,
(I could go on and on)

Give a student a warehouse of knowledge to choose from to let their
creativity soar.

In writing there is first a capital letter, a noun, a
verb,adjectives,adverbs and a .!?

Give knowledge,skills,possibilities,

Sara
