design book /bookgroup?

I want to find a really good crafts book for upper level students,
late teens and early adults, as well as older adults, who are
inexperienced. So I am looking for a book that has it all: lots of
neat projects and step by step illustrated instructions, if possible.
I had a wonderful book in college, Crafts Design, but I can't find it
in print. Please give me some suggestions.I loved Ann's suggestion
for How to Use Your Eyes and I recommend another Elkins book, Why Art
Cannot be Taught. He is a provocative and inspiring writer and the
first book is a visual treat. You know how book groups are taking
off? I have belonged to one for years. I'd like to suggest we start
one online and all read a book over the summer. Maybe the Elkins book
about why art can't be taught -- though it is aimed at college level
teachers. There is another good book that stimulates conversation,
Art and Fear. I don't have the authors here, but I will post them
later. Best to all, Jane in Brooklyn
