My favorite trips to the M FA in Boston with middle school level students included museum organized scavenger hunts through several collections. My Middle school kids loved finding out the name of the the sarcophogus in a certain room and searching for the Greek sculpture that had a domestic animal . (dog) in it., counting the Roman numeral on a Roman sculpture. etc. You can devise your own scavenger hunt with a pre-visit to your favorite rooms .
  Just a thought...

Although I have a film to show before the trip concerning going to an art museum which addresses behavior as well as what to expect...I know the students love finding work we have identified in class.
