Kimberly Herbert prepared a very thorough list a while back --but I did not
save it. Here are two points to remember (from your "Welcome" letter):
>UNSUBSCRIBING:
>Send a blank message to your personal unsubscribe address:
leave-artsednet@lists.getty.edu
At the bottom of your e-mail (WAY down at the bottom of the digest) is your
personal address to copy and paste (or click if your machine is set up that
way).
>CONTRIBUTING TO THE LIST :
>Send a message to: artsednet@lists.getty.edu
(especially new digest folks)
Rather than clicking "reply" which puts "RE: ArtsEdNet Digest" with the date
in the subject line, simply open a new message and type in a subject line
that relates to the topic of your message. If my message does not pertain to
the entire list -- I usually just send to the list member who made the
original post.
Tip #1...Entering in a subject line that agrees with your message makes the
list more manageable for everyone.
Tip #2...When you want to make sure a certain list member reads your
message, either send it to the members personal e-mail account (rather that
to the who list) with the person's name in the subject line --or simply add
that person's name to the subject line (attn: name).
Tip #3....Try to include a brief clip from the original message so other
will know why you are congratulating...or why you want something also (I do
not recommend including the entire post --just a line of tow will do).
Tip #4...DO send a personal e-mail to an individual when you want more
details...or a lesson. Often your "me too" is not read if it is simply a
reply....and in the digest --the member may miss it entirely. I often just
go the new posts (not the re: ) that interest me.
Tip #5....DO be careful what you post and how you word your message (I know
I have offended unintentionally)...E-mail is with out gesture and
inflection --sometimes we write in humor---but it is not taken that way (I
am often guilty of this). Do remember that administrators read this list,
too. Sometimes what we say can put a "bad light" on our profession. While
others may vent in the lounge--we are venting to the world.
Tip #6...If you find receiving the messages as they are posted--try the
digest version (you will receive all of the messages from one day the
following day). I often use the "Edit - Find in message" feature to go to
only the new information that is posted.
Tip #7...When at all possible convert your message to simple text. Fancy
HTML messages come through as "gobbly-goop" (html code) in the digest.
Tip #8...Do not send images or files via attachment to the entire list--
rather offer to send privately to those interested. Attachments
automatically open in the digest and come through as "never ending" list of
code.
Tip #9...Before you unsubscribe weigh the benefits of having 1000's of
professionals as your "assistants". I have added many links to my Web site
as a result of this list....I always ask the list for help when I need
information. It is a valuable resource to all art educators. Some of my most
successful lessons this year were those that were sparked by something I
read from this list.
Tip #10...Create a folder on your computer to store ideas you like...You can
take time during the summer to organize them. (as I have now saved this
message to send only to the new members who I see want to unsubscribe).
Please accept my apology if any of you see this post as "controlling" as
that is not my intention. ("Controlling" is the woman who was standing by
the light switch at post prom last night and told me to turn the lights
on...LOL...Hubby and I had a chuckle or two....said it reminded him of when
he was in the service)
Judy D.
P.S. Kimberly...now we can both keep an "eye open".
