Math and Russian stacking dolls. Just finished these with the third grade.
They are created on an origami cup pattern. Start out with 8" squares. these
I provided and told them they had to cut each successive square 1" smaller.
I showed whole class how to measure a square - using the top left corner as a
starting point. Still
had some kids did it the hard way - they began their squares in the middle of
the page and of course they were crooked. Luckily each table had kids that
caught on real fast and they patiently helped the ones that were slower. I
give extra points for helpers that do so patiently and mannerly. No put
downs allowed. So measuring squares in third grade is possible. Hung
these proudly at my current art show at school - parents were fascinated -
made sure my signs mentioned the math aspect.
