Cleaning up can rob art teachers of their personal and
professional time.
To keep clean up from being an issue, I have made a
clean-up contest chart. Before each lesson, I make
sure students know exactly what to do to clean up.
When I announce that it's time to clean up, they know
what to do. If they clean up on their own with no
feedback from me at all ("No one has hung up the
aprons",etc!) , they get two stickers on the chart for
that day. If I have to give hints, they get one
sticker. If I have to clean up any messes that I did
not make, they get nothing. At the end of the
predetermined number of days, the class with the most
stickers gets a party. I just started this today and
so far it is working like a dream. They totally police
themselves. To let me know that they are "ready" for
me to inspect, they have to be in their seats
completely quiet! Hee Hee.... I feel smart today.
