We are a 7 to 12 jr./sr. high school. Our middle schoolers have only 9
weeks ( 4 days per week) of art TOTAL for a 2 year period. Yes that's
right-- if they have art for 9 weeks in 7th grade, they don't have it in 8th
and vice-versa. The only saving grace is that they can sign up for "Art
Skills" which is an elective class which meets once a week for a semester.
They can opt to take this every semester during 7th and 8th grades. Our
middle school teacher does a fabulous job of covering the basics in such a
short time. She teaches them composition and the elements in a portfolio
cover project, she does contour drawing, a symbolic self portrait, 1 and 2
point perspective, watercolor, and a clay project ( usually a tile). Not
bad for only meeting 36 times!
