I post a few examples of what I like to do so the kids know what they can
accomplish with practice and experience. I tell them I didn't start to draw
until I was 13 and didn't have my first art class until I was 16. It takes
training to be a good artist even if you have a natural talent. I have to
work very hard to satisfy myself on a project and I like to try lots of
differnt media. Since I work with k-5, I remind them how lucky they are they
go to school in a district where they have an elementary art
program. I show them what the AP students are showing at the musuem right now
and what they can do in the future if they stick with it. There's a great
video I show that has several different careers a person could have in art
and it states that you don't have to be a great artist to succeed. Just have
a basic knowledge of the art elements, imaginaton and the ability to work
hard. It shows a computer artist, clothing designer, head of a gallery and
others. JH
