Are you primarily an art teacher or do you teach other
subjects as well?
No, only art.
With what medium do you teach?
Sculpture: Clay, wire, paper, plaster, glazes,
paint(acrylic, tempera, spray), recycled/found objects
(aluminum cans, wall paper, etc.) collage, assemblage,
montage.
Drawing & Ptg.:Pencil, charcoal, oil and chalk pastels,
colored pencils, watercolors, tempera, acrylic, mixed
media, Photoshop, MS Picture It!, Power Point.
IB Art: All the above + B&W Photography, image transfers,
oil ptg, and anything else they wish to work with.
Do your students prefer one medium over another?
Some can handle one material better than another, but if
the project they are doing has them engaged - then they
seem to work just as hard to produce what they are
working on. They do recognize, for the most part, that
they could have done the project better if they had
used__________ (fill in the blank), if they have not used
the media assigned for that particular project
competently.
I also find that kids that start in 3D do so because they
want an art class - but are afraid of drawing because
THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO DRAW. After successful experiences
in 3D, I do encourage many to try Drawing, and they find
they can do other types of art:)
I have found that many can FLY with the computer. They
have ideas, and computer art eases the skills necessary,
say as in drawing, to create the image they imagined.
It is about enabling their expression - isn't it? Art for
communication - teach them a language in which to
communicate.
Do your students prefer using the computer over the
traditional art medium?
Some love the place they go to when they paint, others,
the feel of clay, and others, become one with the
computer. It is like which car do you drive to get from
point A to point B. It doesn't really matter as long as
you arrive. I can't say that there is a majority that
prefer the computer over traditional media.
Have any of your students become bored or tired with the
computer and now prefer to work in the traditional
medium?
No, but I do have many students that use/combine computer
art (incorporated into projects) with traditional media.
Their imagery is becoming more complex.
I have students that see the computer as an optional tool
to use, if they wish, in what they are creating.
Hope that helps!
Vivian
PS Are you researching the use/role of technology in the
art room? I would love to email and talk - since I will
be doing my dissertation on art and technology.
