I tell them that nobody gets good at anything unless they first "TRY".
After trying, comes practice, practice, practice. I use myself as an
example. I get better at watercolor and photography because I
keep my hands in it and practice it. I am a strong believer in teaching
what you know. I consider myself an Artist/Teacher and remind them
when I exhibit my paintings. I have a painting to be auctioned off in
the local Public Television auction next month. They seem amazed that
I know and work and socialize with other "real" artists. I tell them
that their other teachers do the same. I explain that their math
teacher
is working weekends at an Observatory helping calculate the path of a
newly discovered comet, that their English teacher goes to Poetry
workshops and their Science teacher collects water samples for the
EPA to help improve the environment. Don't I wish that all that were
true. Real teachers should be more like Art and Music teachers.
My principal recently asked herself (out loud) why the elective
teachers she has known are the most innovative and change oriented.
Of course, only after they have fought "tooth and nail" for what they
believe in. I tried to explain that we were a different breed, because
we taught what we really believe in and not just a subject area.
