Re: Tell me more! (collecting teacher narratives on classroom management)

Date: Thu Apr 12 2001 - 20:51:21 PDT

Like Holly I am a middle school teacher in NYC and every day presents
similar challenges to those she described. The passing of the buck
isn't quite so bad in my school, but still, little is done. So many
things happen that only the really dangerous situations (children
taken out in handcuffs) are addressed completely. If you have not yet
read the teacher's story in last Sunday's Education Life section of
the New York Times, do so. That teacher taught elementary school and
left, sick, after one year. It takes enormous stamina when art is a
dumping ground for so many really disturbed kids, and yet, going
through the portfolios, I see that each and every child has produced
at least one creditable thing, and many have done a whole lot in the
midst of chaos. I wish it were a better atmosphere for them and for
me! I have already complained to the list about getting a cold just in
time for this holiday break! Stress. XXX to all Jane
