I just did something similar based on the book SING TO THE SUN by Ashley
Bryan. Third grade brought a poem to class and did a tempera painting
illustrating the main point of the poem. Next week they will read and analyze
how their painting fits to their poem.
They also had to memorize their poems in language arts class, so nice
connection to the regular classroom there.
My art coordinator came for a surprise visit this morning while my third
graders were working on their paintings and really liked the lesson. I only
gave the students red, yellow, blue, black, and white paint. They were
limited to 5 colors and had to mix their own. Just about everyone knows how
to make brown now! They have really enjoyed doing the paintings. JH
