> Winslow Homer...so I want to follow up with a hands-on lesson
> that can be completed within 35 min.
Since Winslow's practice to hone his skills and develop his eye
spontaneously was his Civil War illustrations, how 'bout talking about
illustrating? Work with kids sketching, then basically washing watercolor
over the sketches? Take school photos used to capture action such as your
varsity football games, or some footage at girl's softball or boys baseball,
etc, and have them draw from them. Or....use a Civil War documentary if you
really want to have the kids identify with Homer, and a good vcr that pauses
sharply. Catch some scenes that aren't too graphic, but perhaps show camp
life between battles, etc, and freeze them. Have the children do 30-45
second sketches and then watercolor them.
