Judy - I am sorry you can't sub for me - any takers?
As for the Fulbright Memorial Fund - I am very excited
and honored to be chosen for the October 2001 Delegation.
I will travel to Japan for 3 weeks. I had to submit a
proposal as to how I would use this experience in my
classroom and out to the community. I had wanted to apply
2 years ago - but ran out of time to do everything.
We had someone at school place the information in our
mailboxes in October - and I procrastinated - then
someone posted the information on the artsednet talk. So
I got busy and did get everything done on time. I was
trying to post my application online in December and
experienced trouble. So I emailed them and found out that
there were more applicants than expected so the deadline
to post online was extended.
"The Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program (FMF) is
designed to provide American primary and secondary school
teachers and administrators with opportunities for
fully-funded short-term study programs in Japan. Its aim
is to increase understanding of Japan among a crucial
group of Americans who will be helping to shape and
educate the next generation of leaders in this country.
The program will provide significant opportunity for
professional development of individuals who traditionally
do not have such opportunities, as well as strengthen
curricula as it increases the level of understanding
between Japan and the United States of America.
The Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program is sponsored
by the Government of Japan. It was established to
commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Fulbright Program
— a U.S. government-initiated project created in 1946 to
foster mutual understanding through exchanges of
university students, faculty and teachers. More than
6,000 Japanese have benefitted from the U.S. Fulbright
scholarship program.
Many Japanese recipients of Fulbright scholarships went
on to become leaders in government, business, and
education and were instrumental in the post-war
redevelopment of Japan. To show the Japanese people's
appreciation for the Fulbright Program, the Government of
Japan established the Fulbright Memorial Fund and is
inviting thousands of American teachers and
administrators to Japan over the
coming years. The 2001 Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher
Program competition marks the fifth year of this program.
The Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program continues a
tradition of dialogue and exchange between the United
States and Japan. FMF Teacher Program participants will
play a key role in educating our country's youth and in
developing future leaders who are informed about both
countries. The FMF program's focus on primary and
secondary education reflects the importance of
internationalizing curricula at an early stage, and of
providing opportunities for international experience to
those who educate our young people."

I know we have a day of orientation in San Francisco,
then fly to Tokyo, spend time in Tokyo, are placed in
prefecture groups, and then with a host family. We also
have a day where we attend workshops and Art education is
one of the workshops offered.
I know that there are at least 3 others on this list that
have already gone: Argy N, John D., and Nicoletta S.
Maybe they can share some of their experiences. I've been
to John's web site and have read his journal postings.
Also - for the Fulbright Scholar - I know of at least one
other person on this list who is an alternate - this is
not the same as the Fulbright Memorial Fund. The FMF is
funded by the government of Japan.
When it is time to do this for next year (start looking
in Sept. / October) - you all need to look at what you
need to do - and go for it! I never in a million years
would have thought I would be going to Japan! I still
can't believe it!
