Van Gogh is also a favorite of mine. I was given two volumes titled,
"Van Gogh , The Complete paintings", by Walther.Metzger and Taschen.
Once I began, I couldn't put it down. it was as lyrical literally
as the painting were visually. An excerpt......
" His paintings are notable for their immediacy, their senuous impact.
They draw their power from the painter's affectionate openess towards
all things, towards Man and Nature. Still, the pleasure that he takes in the
veritable naive identification with the world is continually overshadowed by
profound eschatological intuitions, by apprehensions of transience and death.
The hand that reaches out so tenderly is retracted at the last moment
because it has been too often hurt."
83% of the pictures are in color, and a glorious feast for the eyes it is!
It
provides fascinating text from his letters to his brother Theo, and comments
about his life and work. I wish we had such a legacy with every artist.
