GOUACHE is a usually a designer's medium. It is brilliant, opaque, has great
tinting strength, and very very expensive!
There are cheap brands on the market, but Windsor & Newton is probably the
best.
It is something I would never consider for elementary, even rarely for high
school.
I can only compare it to a very refined Tempera.
Yes, illustrators use it.
I used it as a fabric designer for the opacity and color brilliance.

I believe Matisse did his cut-outs with gouache covered papers
it is truly a skill to learn how to get an even, flat coverage with this
paint.
